Artist of the Week - Señor Garcia.

Overview // Based in the city of his birth, Madrid, Señor Garcia’s artwork reflects his lifestyle and interests. His collage illustrations are full of old prints, cut out and combined drawings and swooshes of colour – each piece carefully chosen to build a certain mood. Meanwhile, his house is full of bizarre and unusual objects that he’s collected over the years, and they’re every bit as eclectic as his pictures. Often spotted browsing Madrid’s huge El Rastro flea market on the weekends, he’ll pick up everything from pretty pieces of stone to old keys, vintage photos to interesting pieces of wood. He’s been a fan of comics and animation since childhood, and although his work is largely collage, he still loves to draw. Sr Garcia is heavily influenced by Spanish artists such as Brossa, who form of visual poetry in their work. This is what he aims to achieve in his own images too. Though he used to work in a creative agency, he now devotes himself to illustration full time. He loves to collaborate with art directors and come up with something new.

Training // Sr Garcia studied advertising and communication at the Complutense University of Madrid, and also gained a Masters in Art Direction and Graphic Design at Centro de Diseño y Comunicación.

Approach // His illustrations are always collages, however Sr Garcia uses a number of techniques to put them together. A piece usually includes printed images from old engravings, and he might also include some of his own watercolour marks, mixed with pieces of objects and textures. He adapts his techniques and ideas to each assignment, and thus varies the finished style a great deal. The old images he uses are always out of copyright.

Style // Often Sr Garcia’s work has a strong retro feel to it, using a mixture of materials printed decades ago and brought together in new ways in his artwork. Irony and touches of humour are important to him. Sometimes it’s an elegant feel he aims for, sometimes it’s more poetic or even shocking.

Postmodernism in visual communication.

In this week's lecture we learnt and researched about post modernism.

These are the many different words/phrases to explain postmodernism. In the early 20th Century, the war to end all wars didn't end wars, however modernists didn't want to forget history, they want to reinterpret it, artists such as Dali and Picasso did this. Postmodernism began 3pm on March 16th 1972, Modernism had failed by forging a world, they believed less was more. However postmodernists thought more referencing would make more conclusions. They believe that Picasso had one style which became boring, they wanted people to ask questions by including collage and other techniques in the work.

This photo I believe shows different techniques and styles within one photo. The words 'piss on you world', stand out with the writing being in white against the red background. Christopher has used the stereotypical colours of red and blue, which grab the audiences attention, however you instantly are drawn to the man wearing the horns on his head with the crown crossed out. When you look closely below him is a map of the world with lines across it symbolising humans not having any freedom.

This image is showing wealth, Michael Jackson was one of the most well known men in the world, he was the King of Pop to many people, and he helped so many people. He was a very wealthy man and this is shown by him being pictured with his monkey, which many people can not afford this is also shown, with him being painted in gold.
